I was not planing so many political rants......
It is absolutely sick what Rush Limbah and people like him are saying. They cannot have a real discussion on a serious issue like stem cell research because they know they don't have an argument so they have to attack a man like Fox for having one of the most debilitating degenerative diseases. Stem cell research may not have a cure for these kinds of illnesses, but it might. And who is Limbah to say that Fox, who has to watch himself slowly degenerate every day, has no right to speak out for his own cure? If you think he is wrong and that this kind of research is wrong, you think you would at least have the compassion to be respectful of people who have to live through this and all they have left is hope, hope for something you don’t ever want them to have or pursue. Listen to the last statement Fox makes when he asks the people on the religious right, who opinion he respects, to just have a civil discussion and not resort to name-calling.
I want to know who a person that calls themselves a good Christian can attack someone like Fox for hoping for a cure. The last phone call Nancy Ragan made right before Ronald Ragan died from the side of his death bed was to president Bush right before the last election to pleaded on behalf of her dieing husband to change his stance on stem cell research, that her family hoped that Ragan would be one of the last people to die in such a way, and that Bush could help lead to that. I wish I knew what his answer to that was. How a “good Christian” could tell a woman he had know and “respected” for so many years on the day her husband died that her hopes and dreams for the future we immoral and evil. I am sure he did not put it that way, but that was his message.
Similarly the last phone call Christopher Reeves ever made around that same time was to then presidential hopeful John Kerry to thank him personally for standing up for stem cell research in the debates even though every pollster was telling Kerry it was an unpopular view that would not help his election. Most thought Kerry would ovoid the issue and he did not. In such a close race that one issue may have cost him the election, he could have just stayed silent but he spoke out. I don’t know what Reeves said but I am sure that Kerry will remember it for the rest of his life.
You would think that because of what people like Regan, Reeves, and Fox and the millions of other Americans with these illnesses have to go through while they and their families watch themselves die, that the right, the “moral” “values voters” and “good Christians” out their could at least have the respect to keep this debate civil even if the disagree. But having “values” and “morals” and following “Christian teachings” doesn’t mean you have to be respectful of those you disagree with. You wonder why there is such a low level of public discourse in this country, and then you realizes it is because the side arguing for values and morals has neither, to them morals are not about being a good person it is about 10 second sound clips, if you say you care about morals enough someday people will think you have them.
Sorry for the rant.
